Community means wholeness~A place or state of mind where each of us hold the safety, health, and well-being of the entire neighborhood at heart. Community is a place where children laugh and play in the tall field grass; where every neighbor has a vegetable and flower garden; where trees are the rule, and butterflies, june bugs, lady bugs, and earth babies abound. It is about accountability and responsibility~where every child belongs to each of us, and is therefore responsible for good behavior. It is the place where I grew up and will forever hold sacred.

Painting a Picture of Community-Where Midwest Meets Middle East Deep in the Heart of Texas~
My neighbor Bob was from the Midwest. A strong personality with hands that looked like he built America. Bob had retired to our neighborhood while the rest of us were just starting our families. The kind of guy that was aware of everything. If your lawn was too long, Bob would mow it for you and then let you know that you needed to do it next time. He wasn't afraid to speak his mind.

Enter stage right into the neighborhood Ivan and Heidi. Ivan was from Pakistan and met his lovely in the Midwest before moving to Texas. Ivan for years would take the neighborhood kids to school and volunteered as a Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) at the local elementary school. When Bob became ill it was Ivan and Heidi that stepped up to the plate to take care of Bob and his wife Marion.

It was Ivan that held Bob as he took his last breath. How beautiful is that? How much sacrifice does it take to build community? What forbearance does it take accept each others differences while looking for common ground to build upon?

Ivan and Heidi still visit Marion years after Bob's passing.

Community means 'being part of the whole and not separate.' Specifically, it means that all of us are not alone, but share equally in the oneness of being. Our spirit or Creator is not separate from us. He is everywhere, and therefore He is both outside of us and WITHIN us. He is whole and He envelopes each of us. Therefore, we are part of that whole.

Since we equally share in His oneness, no one is either superior or inferior to another. In other words, there is not need for judgment once you understand all of us are part of the whole of God.

Being part of a community gives responsibility--not only for ourselves but for others in the community. Since we are all part of the whole, everything we do can affect the other parts. If you are in a good mood, others will respond accordingly. If on the other hand, you choose to focus only on the destructive, you will bring continue to bring destructive influences into your life.
